Metzger wins awards for stunning homes at Clearwater ANDREW KING

Two stunning houses at Clearwater and a house in Merivale have won top awards at the Registered Master Builders 2015 House of the Year awards. Metzger Builders won two titles for building the winning houses at Clearwater. The first award was in the Carters New Home $1 million to $2 million category. The home caught the judges eyes due to the use of american oak joinery, beautifully contrasted with the western red cedar creating “warmth, colour and texture. Judges commended Metzger Builders for showing “pride and passion at the awards din-

ner held on Saturday. Metzger Builders notched up a second win in the Builder’s Own Home award. An eye-catching raised platform flowing out to the swimming pool, spa and gym and through to a pristine stream, earned praise from the judge – as did a bath that fills from the ceiling with a push of a button. A Merivale home built by Sugrue Construction, that “exudes elegance won the Heart of the Home Kitchen award. “This contemporary kitchen containing a well-balanced but restrained palette of materials is designed and built for the ultimate in entertaining, the judges said.

Worry over plan to axe car parks for cycleway GABRIELLE STUART

Businesses are worried they could lose customers, as almost 400 car parks in St Albans and Papanui could be removed to make way for the new Papanui Parallel cycleway. The cycleway is part of the city council’s $156m major cycle routes network. It will run from Bealey Ave to Northlands mall, travelling along Colombo, Rutland and Grassmere Sts to Main North and Sawyers Arms Rds. Under the plans, which have been released for public feedback, 380 or more car parks could be lost, as well as 48 trees. Gaby Topp, owner of Meshino Espresso on Rutland St, said it was a busy area and cutting car parks there would be “stupid”. She was worried it could hurt many of the small businesses there. “If people can’t get a park, they aren’t going to drive around the block looking for one – they’re just going to keep driving past and go somewhere else.”

She planned to make a submission to the city council opposing the plan, and hoped it could be changed. Under the plan, 327 car parks would be lost in residential areas, with the number of spaces dropping from 554 to 227. In business areas, 53 or more car parks are set to go, dropping from 83 spaces to 25-30. However, fellow Rutland St business owner Lorraine Burke,

of Loaf Salon, said she supported the plan, even if it meant car parks near the business were cut. She said there were usually parking spaces down side streets in the area, if the parks on Rutland St were full. “I do cycle myself, but it is pretty scary on the roads at the moment, so I think the cycleway will absolutely be a good thing. They should have them everywhere.”

BUY OF THE MONTH

Shirley-Papanui Ward city councillor Pauline Cotter (left) said several people had called her with concerns about the plan. However, she said it was only a proposal and the city council was open to making changes. “There are options there. Staff will usually recommend the best practice option, but sometimes we have to go with a different one, because there are things people just aren’t prepared to lose.” She said community meetings were being held to give people a chance to have their say, and their thoughts would be listened to. “It is going to be contentious for a lot of people, so we need to have those people come to us to talk about it. We know there is an overwhelming desire for cycleways, but the question is, how do we do it? And we want to hear people’s ideas.” Details of meetings can be found on the city council website, and submissions can be made online or at city council service centres.

ROADWORK UPDATE Barbadoes St is one-way southbound between Bealey Ave and Canon St for around eight weeks. Stronger Christchurch Infrastructure Rebuild Team said north-bound traffic should take Madras St to detour around the work. Clyde Rd will have a lane closed today near Otara Reserve with temporary traffic lights maintaining two-way traffic. The Stronger Christchurch Infrastructure Rebuild Team said drivers should allow more travelling time. There is one more week of night works scheduled for repairing wastewater pipes in Papanui Rd, Heaton St, Strowan Rd and Blighs Rd. MAN COLLAPSES St John reponded to a man who collapsed at the corner of North Parade and Shirley Rd around 1.36am on November 8. A rapid respose vehicle and ambulance were sent to the scene and the man, in his 20s, was taken to Christchurh Hospital’s emergency department in a moderate condition

Different motivations around council table City councillor and FendaltonWaimairi Community Board member – Jamie Gough Some cynics would suggest that ‘democracy works’ is an oxymoron – I wouldn’t go that far, though there are times when the democratic process doesn’t feel particularly democratic. A perfect case and point is the currently in-train Representation Review. City council is recommending to the Local Government Commission an overhaul of how the councillors and community boards are elected. Do you recall the media commentary around adding more councillors, because it apparently enhances representation and is a good idea? This is what it’s all about. It’s incredibly frustrating because, to be frank, it’s not a good idea and isn’t what people even want – other than some councillors themselves and a handful of highly politically charged individuals. No one with any nous surely believes adding more councillors to the council table actually makes the council better, more strategic,

more effective or more efficient? I favour quality over quantity any day of the week. I would advocate for less, though accepting that won’t happen, you don’t need to change – at great expense – something that isn’t really broken. You may also recall that it was this city council that said it was too cash-strapped to put up the city’s Christmas decorations, yet in the next breath they are advocating adding at least three more full-time councillors to the table? I voted yes to Christmas decorations and no to more councillors. The people with the biggest vested interest (i.e. councillors) drive this to suit ideologically views and that’s the crux of it. What suits them is what you’ll potentially end up with. It’s bizarre at best and actually quite perverse. We had a little over 100 submissions (out of a city of 360,000-ish people). I think residents have bigger things to worry about than this and actually, the council has bigger things to be doing with its time too. Unlike other local authorities, we are in the middle of a District Plan Review, setting up Regenerate Christchurch and Development

Christchurch, to name only a few of the unique and extraordinary tasks at hand. Why not ask the minister to use the Canterbury Earthquake Recovery Act to defer this for another council to do when timing is more appropriate? The CER Act exists because it recognises that Christchurch is not in a business as usual time. There’s a census next year so perhaps you’d be better to base all this on relevant information, not outdated data from years ago from the middle of a major earthquake recovery. But perhaps that would all just make far too much sense. I came to council from the commercial sector, and I said that my focus was on doing a job not just getting a job. I sadly feel at times – perfectly illustrated by this process – that many around the council table have completely opposite motivations to me. Do you agree with Jamie Gough’s views on adding more councillors? Email your thoughts in 200 words or less to andrew.king@starmedia.kiwi

Stars’ bid to wipe out stigma over men who dance ANDREW KING

After having their first boy, New Zealand’s Got Talent stars Lei’ataua and Kate Limuloa, realised there was still huge stigma around men who dance. But now the duo in life and on the dance floor, have started a dance workshop in Bishopdale especially for boys to combat the stereotype. Mr and Mrs Limuloa were runners-up on the television programme New Zealand’s Got Talent in 2013. Now they have launched Silhouette Workshops, a dance class for boys at the Bishopdale YMCA. Mrs Limuloa, also dance teacher at St Margaret’s College, said she had the vision to start the dance classes seven years ago when the couple had their first boy. “Believe it or not we still have parents saying that dance isn’t for boys and we want to see that gone completely.” Mrs Limuloa said the first class, held recently, had a great turnout and gave her confidence

for the future. “It was a huge success with 25 keen boys from all over Christchurch coming along for the day and learning a range of dance genres including hip hop, commercial jazz, technical foundation, breakdance and salsa,” she said. Mr Limuloa, a rugby player in New Brighton’s division one team, manages to juggle dance and the sport. “We are going to run a few more workshops over the sum-

mer as well as in schools around Christchurch and then we are launching a boys’ dance academy in 2016.” Some of the tutors at the dance classes include national competitive gymnast Ashleigh SearleONeil and Steve Tiwa of the Christchurch breakdancing crew ‘Commonground’. “We do have plans to run open classes in other styles next year for girls as well but at this stage we want to focus on the boys’ programme,” she said.

HELP NEEDED Police are investigating a complaint that a woman was assaulted by an unknown male wearing a black hooded sweatshirt in a residential street close to the Little Brown Jug bar in Bryndwr, about 2.15am November 8. Police are looking for a missing reusable New World shopping bag which contained various items of clothing and personal items including hair straighteners. Any residents in this area who may have heard a disturbance in their street or seen anything around this time are encouraged to phone Detective Sergeant Kylie Schaare on 363 7400 or anonymously via Crimestoppers on 0800 555 111. REPAIR WORK RESCHEDULED Repair work to the boardroom at the Fendalton Library has been moved back a day so it will not interrupt a community board meeting. The Fendalton-Waimairi Community Board has asked for the start date to be moved from November 30 to December 1 as it has a scheduled meeting that day. Repair work will be to the ceiling in the boardroom. TREE REMOVAL The Fendalton-Waimairi

Community Board has approved the removal of two trees on the berm outside 63 Rossall St, Merivale. The trees need to be removed for a driveway to be installed. They will be replaced and the board has asked that replacement planting be completed by the end of the current planting season FUNDING GRANTED Burnside High School student Caitlin Hendren has been granted $400 from the Fendalton-Waimairi Community Board youth development fund for her exchange trip to France. The 17-year-old will travel to France from November 29 to January 12. Caitlin is looking at studying commerce and law at university with the goal of working internationally. She also intends to continue with her French studies at university. NO-STOPPING APPROVED The Fendalton-Waimairi Community Board has approved no stopping lines at the intersection of Stackhouse Ave and Eastling St. This means the vehicles are not allowed to stop on the west side of Stackhouse Ave, extending in south for a distance of 21m and on the east side for a distance of 15m.

Producer of buskers festival the The SCIRT World Buskers Festival does not start until January 14, but producer Tim Bain is already busy sourcing unusual props and booking show-stopping entertainers. He chats to Fraser Walker-Pearce Thanks for chatting with me Tim, right now you’re super busy with setting up the buskers festival for next year. How’s that going? We launched the project this week just gone. So we’re definitely not on the home straight, but we are getting the stages ready, which is great. But then you have to worry about the performers’ visas, flights, production requirements and everything else. The festival goes from January 14-24. Realistically though, you have to have it all done before Christmas time because no one’s in town around that time. There are four of us setting up the entire festival, which is pretty

insane now that I’m saying it out loud. Considering we get about 500 applicants a year from performers, from musicians to buskers to everything that’s pretty cool. It’s got a great reputation, and the cool thing about this year is that we have 13 countries being represented, which is the most ever. What does the associate artistic director for the buskers festival mean? We actually decided to change my title to producer after we had a big discussion, it reflects what I’m doing a bit better. So basically my job is to liaise with all the performers, get all the flights, marketing, visas, everything sorted. I also have to source 500 plastic ponchos, more than 100-litres of kerosene, 40 juggling balls, 50 something cardboard boxes, 14 VCRs, 10 TVs, a kitchen sink, more than 5000 cable ties and some other random props for certain artists. Along with that,

I make sure they get here safely, and that they’ve got accommodation, well looked after and everything else. Just everything really! What performances are you most looking forward to in next year’s festival? I’m most looking forward to Yana Alana, who is a cabaret/ one-woman show. And also Buskers Burlesque which is a headline show for the festival. Who is your all-time favourite burlesque performer? It’s got to be Perle Noire. I bet there are a few stories of your time working with Mark Hadlow for MAMIL (Middle-Aged Man In Lycra? One thing that stands out during MAMIL, which is just Mark on stage, was when something would go quite wrong like a wrong prop or something, the show would not necessarily break down . . . but it sure got close a few times! he got the giggles before he went on stage, which made me really concerned. He’d have to walk on stage and say to himself: ‘Get it together.’ I’m also lucky to have worked with the top 10 burlesque dancers in the world. To have worked with them and to create something in the festival is pretty amazing. What most people don’t realise is that burlesque performances don’t come prearranged, they are literally made up the day before the performance. You have 24 hours to create an entire show, which can be bedlam, but come the next day, it always goes off, it just explodes. And you’ve been involved with Camp America before, too? Tell me about that. Yes, I went to the camp in the United States nine times. I live in Sydenham now, but when I first did Camp America I lived in Riccarton, and it’s a really long way to America. dream job to have BUSY MAN: Tim Bain is the producer of the 2016 World Buskers Festival, to be held around the city.

It’s pretty awesome really because you get to do stuff that you wouldn’t normally get the chance to do. I can’t think of anyone who wouldn’t jump at the chance to get paid to ride a jet ski with kids. Agreed! Where do you sign up? No, I’m joking. What would be the best part of those camps? A lot of people would say a specific event with the kids, but for me it’s the connections that I made

with the other counsellors. I still talk to people from my first camp, so that’s really awesome. Now I have connections all around the world. When you live and work with someone for eight weeks straight you really grow tight with them. When you were doing drama studies yourself, did you ever get on stage and freeze, or ruin your lines or something like that? No, I don’t think so. The environment when I was

at Riccarton High was so supportive. I remember one time we had to perform a Greek play where in the final scene everyone is either dead or dying, and my character had a massive monologue to the audience and at the end of it there was silence. And I looked out into the audience and saw my dean, who covered her face and just bawled. It was great! Is this your dream job? It is absolutely my dream job.

Pre-school’s health regime earns award

A Harewood pre-school has recently been given a Healthy Heart Award. Aratupu Preschool and Nursery, run by the Christchurch Methodist Mission, on Harewood Rd received a Rito from

the Heart Foundation. It is the first of three levels available which recognises the commitment of staff to create an environment promoting healthy eating and physical activity. Marie Benns (left) is the cook at Aratupu and worked hard to ensure that all necessary requirements were met. This included providing a nutrition and physical activity policy, copy of a menu with a list of five different vegetables used across the week and one fruit serving across the day. Having the menu available to parents at any time requested and stories relating to nutrition and physical activity over the past year have also contributed to the pre-school winning the award.

Rangi showcases talents Rangi Ruru Girls’ School students have poured all their art knowledge learnt over the past year into their final art projects. The school selected some of best portfolios to be on display in the Nor’ West News. School leader of the visual art faculty Libby Sheehy said the selected three works demonstrated independent and personalised learning. “These three works from year 11 art and year 12 painting and photography are strong examples of the diversity of style and approach our students choose to take. “The students are required

to investigate and explore their own themes and ideas through research and practical work,” she said. PAINTING TALENT: Year 12 student Lily Lee’s end-of-year painting.

A BIT OF NATURE: Year 11 student Kate Donald’s end of year piece.

Cotswold Eco-Crusaders clean their favourite park PITCHING IN: Northwood Preschool and Nursery have been fundraising over the last month to support the charity.

Joint-effort fundraiser for Ronald McDonald House A splash of paint and a few family donations have helped one pre-school raise funds for Ronald McDonald House. The children and teachers at Northwood Preschool and Nursery created art canvases and last month the school invited families to purchase their child’s artwork. The money would then be donated to Ronald McDonald House. Centre manager Kylee Rangirangi-Teale said the art exhibition idea came about after one of the teachers received amazing support for her family from Ronald McDonald House when her daughter was sick.

Ronald McDonald House is a facility where families have free accommodation and support, while their child is receiving treatment. “We as a team wanted to pay this forward by fundraising within our centre,” said Mrs Rangirangi-Teale. The money raised will go to Ronald McDonald House’s Family Dinner programme. “We know the charity appreciates this effort made from people in the community to take time participating in the Family Dinner programme as families are spending most of their time in the hospital and

may not get a chance to cook meals for themselves,” said MRs Rangirangi-Teale. “We had a fun-filled night where parents took the opportunity to look at the artwork displayed in each of the classrooms, participate in spot prizes and a secret auction to have a chance to bid on a combined classroom art canvas,” she said. “We would like to take this opportunity to thank our families who have donated to this worthy cause and the Northwood team for all the effort they put into making the evening a success,” she said.

Three socks and carpet squares were some of the more unusual things found by Cotswold School’s Eco-Crusaders as they cleaned up Bishopdale Park. Looking after their local park has become a tradition at the school with this being the sixth year of clean-up. Big achievements for jammers Selwyn House School pupils won their category in this year’s national Jump Jam competition. Grace Jenkins, Georgina Scott and Ella Stephens won the XFactor year 7-8 grade. Team organiser Jean Scott said the girls took charge of the whole project. “Georgina was in charge of verbal instruction, Ella was looking after the countdown, the showing of visual cues, and Grace was doing all the directional changes,” she said. The three girls had to perform four minutes of a pre-choreo-

graphed performance while being critiqued by judges. “It is massive to win this,” Ms Scott said. “They have to go through a preliminary round which meant they had to send in a video of doing their routine.” Selwyn House also entered 13 girls in the Strictly Jump Jam category where they had to change 25 per cent of the routine - Grace, Ella and Georgina were involved in this group also.

Roydvale fair a great hit with pupils

WINNERS: Pupils Grace Jenkins, Ella Stephens and Georgina Scott (middle) won the year 7-8 X-Factor Jump Jam category.

Even the rain could not stop teachers being the target at the Roydvale Primary School fair this year. The biennial event saw the teachers get water dropped onto them by pupils. Fairgoers also had an opportunity to smash up a car as part of the fair and refuelled with all the food on offer. Principal assistant Karen Dow was thrilled that the event was

your

such a success. “It was a fantastic day even the rain did not dampen the community spirit,” she said. Ms Dow said the stalls did very well and all money raised would go towards digital technology, sports uniforms, sports equipment and musical instruments. The money was still being counted. “The children and adults had a lovely time and it was great to see the extended community getting behind the school,” she said. “We were quite overwhelmed by the support.”

DUNKED: Roydvale Primary School teacher Fiona Lill didn’t mind a bit of water on fair day.

EQC UPDATE

KEEPING YOU INFORMED | NOVEMBER 2015

Fix and fasten preparedness campaign goes live EQC’s new TV advertisements, which are airing throughout the country, encourage people to think about earthquake preparedness in the same way as the other the things we do naturally and automatically to protect our families – like moving the handle of a boiling pot out of the reach of children. Cantabrians lead the way in earthquake preparedness, but there is still more do to. For information on how to fix and fasten your home go to www.eqc.govt.nz/fixfasten. Left to right – Leanne Curtis (CanCERN) and Paula McPhail (EQC)

Winning hard yards with community advocates As CanCERN shuts its doors for the last time in December, the Earthquake Commission (EQC) recognises the important role this group of community-minded people played in improving EQC’s customer focus. CanCERN is one of a group of independent Canterbury advocacy agencies who meet regularly with EQC to provide feedback on its work in Canterbury. They have championed the use of everyday language, more regular customer contact and relevant, consistent information. They especially pushed for more face-to-face opportunities for customers to get answers on their individual claims, and the chance to help as independent advocates in the most challenging EQC-customer situations. It has not been an easy path, says EQC Chief Executive, Ian Simpson. “As I recall, we invited these groups to meet us after some of their members protested outside our offices in Christchurch. We recognised quickly that, whatever we were doing wasn’t working, and we had to listen and learn.” One of the most vocal critics of EQC was Leanne Curtis of CanCERN. “The EQC customer advocates group meetings never happened particularly well at the beginning, but the attitude changed and we were able to help EQC think through the strategies from a resident’s perspective,“ Ms Curtis says.

“However, If the benefit of strategies did not trickle down to the homeowner – they’d be irrelevant. I have seen what some EQC staff tried to do to help customers, and they need support from the rest of the organisation.” Ms Curtis predicts that 2016 will be one of the most difficult for EQC and other rebuild agencies. “You’ll be dealing with the hardest, most exhausted customers and this makes ties between community advocates and EQC even more important.” “CanCERN will be gone, but that community voice is important because you want help from solutions-based people who are focused on making things better for the homeowners.” One of the biggest milestones for the groups was their input to EQC plans for settling earthquake damage claims on land, in particular properties with Increased Vulnerability to Flooding, and Liquefaction (IFV and ILV). The first “Land Hubs” were launched at the end of 2014, in which Government agencies and the community advocates groups made themselves available in a church hall to provide information on land. This template proved so successful that a more permanent information centre was set up under the In The Know Hub brand, at the Eastgate Shopping Centre in April 2015. The hub is open 9am to 5pm, Monday to Thursday, at the same location to the end of the year. Paula McPhail, EQC’s Canterbury Customer Solutions Manager says: “EQC remains fully committed to continuing to work with these groups, because it’s working for our customers. What form that will take though, with CanCERN closing and some of the other agencies preparing to reduce their footprint in Christchurch, is still being discussed. For now though, we’re happy to keep talking to customers.”

EQC releases results of world-leading land strengthening research The Earthquake Commission (EQC) has just released a report on more practical and affordable ways of making residential land less vulnerable to liquefaction. “The report summarises two years of world-leading research through our Ground Improvement Programme, involving New Zealand and international experts,” EQC General Manager Reinsurance, Research and Education Dr Hugh Cowan says. The research has identified repair methods previously only viable for commercial-scale projects that can now be used to strengthen residential land, making the homes built on the land more resilient in future earthquakes. “An approach that looks at the land and the house together when rebuilding a property on liquefaction-prone land will give homeowners more options and better outcomes. This is something that can now be applied throughout New Zealand and globally,” Dr Cowan says. The findings from the research are useful to anyone nationally with an interest in understanding how residential properties can be made less vulnerable to damage from liquefaction. This includes property owners and developers, architects, engineers and builders. Over the next year EQC will be engaging with these groups more closely to ensure they are aware of the Ground Improvement Programme’s findings and understand how they can use them in their work. A copy of the report Residential Ground Improvement: Findings from trials to manage liquefaction vulnerability, together with more information on the Ground Improvement Programme, can be found on the EQC website at www.eqc.govt.nz/GIP.

Fellow dancer Shelyse Wadley, of Marshland, placed third. Both attend Levings School of Dance, who had eight dancers attend the exams with three making the finals. nominated if the examiner feels they have what it takes to go through to the scholarships to Wellington at the end of the year. There were 40 dancers from around New Zealand in the ballet category, which was whittled down to eight. Levings School of Dance

owner Avril Levings said she was thrilled to have three in the final eight. “Juliette Ward, Shelyse Wadley and Callahan Laird all made it into the finals,” she said. “The results were announced at the end, Shelyse placed third and Juliette won the title it was so exciting.”

Guy Fawkes night came and went last week without major incident. I’m old enough to remember when exploding fireworks (double happies), sky rockets and jumping jacks were available and the on sale period was as long as the retailer wanted. In those times it was not uncommon to have several building fires burning at the one time. It was not uncommon for people to lose fingers, kids to lose an eye. We do appear to have more concern for people’s safety these days. Thankfully, the rockets and bangers have been banned.

But there is still the unnecessary spike in fire calls early each November. The incidents are generally not as numerous or as serious. But if such an incident coincided with someone you love being trapped in a burning house, or in a crashed car or an industrial accident I’m picking you would rather the nearest fire truck was not unavailable because the crew were cleaning up the result of some idiot being reckless with fireworks. We had another incident this week where a young child locked themselves in a car by hitting the lock and having the central locking do its thing. Something else in the endless list of things parents need to be aware of.

ON THE RIGHT TRACK: Christchurch Boys’ High School student Caleb Cross in action at Pukekohe.

Student racer on track in Toyota 86 series JAIMIE KEAY

Knowing the conditions better will be a key factor in Caleb Cross’ next outing in the 2015-2016 Toyota Finance 86 Championship. The Christchurch Boys’ High School student says his inexperience in a closed roofed car cost him in the first round at Pukekohe last week. But he finished a credible 11th at the end of three races. Cross said he was pleased with his first outing on the ‘unforgiving’ Pukekohe track driving his two-door coupe. Across the three races Cross consistently improved his lap times and in his final race he finished within 1sec of the current lap record.

Cross said it is a big change going from karting to race car driving. “It is a lot more to take into consideration; the gears and feeling how much grip there is. “Basically it’s a lot more to get right which means the margin for error is a lot less,” he said. With the race a part of the Pukekohe round of the Australian V8 Supercar series, Cross said it was a big change racing in front of nearly 120,000 people. “With the grandstands full it can be quite scary with all those people watching you,” he said. Cross also said he really enjoyed dealing with local

school students who came to the race track. “I love doing that sort of stuff. I remember as a kid doing the same thing so I’m always happy to chat with them, give them some advice.” With one round under his belt, Cross said he is looking for a big couple of rounds to help push his points up. “My overall goal is to finish fourth, with a couple of big rounds in there, just want to keep pushing up the leader board,” he said. The next race for Cross is on November 27 at Hampton Downs before seeing him in action in Christchurch on January 14-16 at Ruapuna Raceway.

MEET THE CLINICAL TEAM!

Get advice when buying home with SHELLEY HANNA

YOUR KIWISAVER My boyfriend and I are both 24 and working fulltime. We are looking at using our KiwiSaver to buy our first home. Trouble is, I have nearly $15,000 in my account as I joined in 2007 whereas he joined more recently and has only $9000. We both spent four years at university so have not been contributing for long enough to get the HomeStart grant. My question is, should we contribute equal amounts or should I put in more? It is good that you are having these discussions now. You have probably worked how much you can afford to borrow and will be looking at getting your deposit together. First home buyers using KiwiSaver may be eligible for a Welcome Home loan, which only requires a 10 per cent deposit rather than 20 per cent. Housing New Zealand does not issue the loan. This is done through selected banks and credit unions. Housing New Zealand underwrites the loan for the lender and you will need to meet the lender’s specific lending criteria. Under these terms, if you are looking at a house worth

RELATIONSHIP FOUNDATION: Should young couples invest equally into their new home even if their KiwiSaver totals are significantly different?

$250,000 you will need a deposit of $25,000. You must leave $1000 in your KiwiSaver accounts, which gives you $22,000 towards a deposit — not far off what you need. However, it may be worth waiting until you qualify for the HomeStart grant. Once you have been contributing at least 3 per cent of your salary for three years, you could be eligible for $3000 each. You can read up on the eligibility criteria on the Housing New Zealand website. If you both qualify, this is an extra $6000 towards your first home (or $10,000 once you have five

years’ contributions behind you). This money does not need to be paid back as long as you live in the house for at least six months. You may be thinking that property prices are going up and you don’t want to miss out but we can’t predict what property markets are going to do. There are always bargains to be found if you are willing to buy a property that needs some fixing up or has an issue that is putting buyers off such as lack of fencing or off street parking. If you need every dollar, then you may have to contribute

more from your KiwiSaver than your partner. If this is the case, it would be worth drawing up a relationship property agreement through a lawyer. This is best done before you buy your first home. Having an agreement in place on what rightfully belongs to each of your allows you some protection over what assets, if any, you brought into the relationship. The cost of having one of these agreements written up varies according to the level of complexity. It’s important to note that if you’ve been living together for three years already then protecting your assets could be a lot trickier because the law considers you to be in a de facto arrangement. Anything you have acquired while living together could be considered relationship property. You will need a lawyer to help with your property purchase, so this is a good time to get some advice. You will be able to look at Wills and Enduring Powers of Attorney as well. Buying a home is a big investment so take your time and do it properly. Financial planning for spontaneous clients By Liz Koh Financial planning and life planning are inextricably linked. After all, the purpose of having money is so we can live the life we want. The starting point of a financial plan is always to ask, ‘What are your goals?’ The art of financial planning is to work with people to draw out their individual approach to life rather than applying a standard template. There are people who strongly resist goal-setting and planning. For such people,

Physiotherapists offer ‘two-pronged attack’ to treat injury problems When our body feels pain, it’s telling us that something is wrong, but it’s not necessary to live with ongoing musculoskeletal pain, says Richard Hopkins of Physiotherapy Associates in Wainoni Road.

“T

he function of pain is to act as a warning system so you are more aware of looking after that area of your body. However, when the body is injured the nerves can become extra sensitive, and this sensitivity can remain even after the injury is healed, so you are left with a pain you don’t have to have, which can become a chronic pain.” As Richard points out, we tend to avoid using the part of our body that is sore, and this can result in lack of normal movement, leading to gradual deconditioning of the muscles, resulting in more load on the joints. “If we avoid feeling the pain, this can become a problem because we are using that part of the body less. Even after the cause of the pain has gone, the pain may remain for a variety of reasons.” To deal with such situations, he and

fellow physiotherapist Wendy Cooper offer a “two-pronged attack”. “This involves dealing with the pain caused by the injury, and then treating the deconditioning to bring the body

back to normal.” Patients usually need an average of four to five physiotherapy sessions, though this can vary according to the extent of the injury and the deconditioning that has occurred. Richard and Wendy liaise with the patient’s GP or other health professionals if necessary. They also manage the ACC paperwork and arrange X-ray or ultrasound scans if required. You don’t need to be referred by your GP to receive physiotherapy treatment at Physiotherapy Associates, you can contact them directly to make an appointment, Richard says. Opening hours are 8am to 6pm, Monday to Friday. The clinic is located at 86a Wainoni Rd, opposite Porritt Park. Phone 389 7196.

Fat Freeze machine gets results! The cryolipolysis (Fat Freeze) machine is so effective – you will be amazed by the results.

H

ow does the treatment work? With our treatment, we use a specially designed vacuum to gently draw up the skin area; the automated cooling handles then starts the treatment, which can be programmable, including treatment time. The great thing about this treatment, apart from that it’s simple and really effective, is that it’s designed to be a ‘lunchtime job’, where clients can return to normal activities right afterwards without discomfort and the only tell-tale signs being a flushed skin appearance (on the treated area) for a few hours.

QA

WOW!

50% off first treatment

Research from the American Society for Laser Medicine and Surgery suggests a loss of 20 to 40 per cent for each treatment (where 20 per cent is the average). After a two-month wait, when you are ready for the next treatment, you can look forward to another 20 per cent and even more being lost. Sometimes one treatment is enough. The technology of using cold to decompose fat cells was pioneered by the president of the Pennsylvania University School of Medicine in America and has since gained FDA approval as well as European CE. Unlike other slimming technologies out there, this one is designed as an alternative to liposuction for areas of localised fat, for example, back rolls, muffin tops, love handles.

Can I use this treatment? Ca

Good candidates have bulges in certain areas are they want to get rid of. This is not w a weight loss solution for people who are obe The client should always consult obese. with the practioner.

What can I do after the treatment? Usually we have patients going back to work immediately after the session. Some patients experience redness, tingling or numbness in the treated area, but this is temporary and will resolve completely. For others some bruising and discomfort may occur.

How long until I see results? Visible changes occur as quickly as three weeks, while the most dramatic results show after two months. The body will continue to flush out fat cells along with its toxins up to four to six months after treatment.

Aurion – big car with a big engine Whereas Toyota has just launched a new generation Camry, its stablemate, the bigengined Aurion, which shares much the same ideology, doesn’t take on such a dramatic change. However, it has had a facelift which will see it through to the end of Australian manufacture in 2017. And the reality is, there was little in the old Aurion that needed refreshing, it has been a solid performer for Toyota, its large car feel and spaciousness has been a lure for those who like six-cylinder engines and aren’t prepared to compromise on performance. In terms of change, the Aurion gets a new grille and bumper, while Sportivo models have garnish changes to enhance a sporty look such as big black wheels. Inside, there’s a lot of extra detail, minor fitment features such as upgraded gauges, rear window blind, audio upgrades, Bluetooth streaming and upgraded trim detailing. The Aurion lands here in three variations, the entry-level model sits at $50,990, while a Sportivo SX6 and ZR6 are priced at $52,490 and $54,990 respectively. The evaluation car was the mid-range model, and it performs as well as it looks.

SPECIFICATIONS

Other than those changes I’ve just mentioned, the concept of Aurion hasn’t altered. It shares its 3.5-litre engine with a lot of other Toyota and Lexus product and, what’s more, it is a strong engine with high power outputs – 200kW and 336Nm, it is also managed so that efficiency isn’t overly compromised. But given its capacity and strength, it does like to work hard and freely, it will surge under acceleration providing a quick standstill to 100km/h time of 7.1sec. It will also lunge through a highway overtake in 4.8sec, making 120km/h from 80km/h. Response to throttle request is sharp and instant, the power flows evenly through a six-speed automatic gearbox, the only transmission in the range. The gearbox has a manual shift function at the main gearshift lever itself and through steering wheel-mounted paddles, but such is the strength of the engine and the management process which encourages early shifts so that fuel usage isn’t

Price: Toyota Aurion Sportivo SX6, $52,490. Dimensions: Length,4855mm; width, 1825mm; height, 1470mm. Configuration: V6 transverse, front-wheel-drive, 3456cc, 200kW, 336Nm, six-speed automatic. Performance: 0-100km/h, 7.1sec.

wasted, I mostly let the transmission change according to its own shift patterns. Toyota claims a 9.3-litre per 100km/h (30mpg) combined cycle average which correlates well with my time with the test car at 10/100km (28mpg). That figure taking into account that I often worked the engine hard, just to feel its surge. At 100km/h, a 7/100km (40mpg) instantaneous figure is available, the engine turning over at just 1650rpm in top gear. Given its performance capability, these figures are rather remarkable. At open road speed the Aurion cruises quietly, it glides through the air with just a slight hum off

the Bridgestone Turanza tyres (225/45 x18in), only on coarse chip seal. It is a happy highway traveller, dispensing the kilometres with ease, and affording the occupants a comfortable, moderately firmed ride. The spring and damper rates have been well engineered so that the Aurion will absorb uneven surfaces without jolting the cabin proper. The suspension will also keep the platform and body structure even when tackling the inevitable twists and turns. Major items of equipment include dual zone climate control, comprehensive trip computer, keyless entry and ignition, and

premium audio with iPod/USB connectivity. For safety there is traction and stability control, complex air bag network, reversing camera, blind spot monitoring and ISOFIX child seat tethers. Just like the Camry, the Aurion provides a pleasing driving experience and a level of comfort which rivals models with far greater pedigree. Every time I think that we might lose great cars like the Aurion when the Australian manufacturing industry shuts down, I can’t help but feel we are losing something traditionally Australasian. Although large car sales have dwindled in recent years thanks to the popularity of sport utility vehicles, it’s been cars like the Aurion and other big Aussie sedans that have paved the way for our desire of big cars and their big engines.

T

he clean, squared-off lines of Strathmore are as desirable now as they ever were, lending themselves well to contemporary living. Clad in poured concrete, this 1937 home has the large rooms and solidity of build that was typical of its time and now partnered with extensive and clever renovations that include underfloor heating, very stylish bathrooms and a long, gallery-style balcony. Five bedrooms, two bathrooms, three living areas and a computer nook are all incorporated within its 333m2 floor plan, along with a designer kitchen and European-styled dining room. Totally private, the large botanical-styled grounds come courtesy of great landscaping and years of growth to produce specimen trees and lush plantings across approximately 1600m2 of land. Superb interior design and all the practical features, including triple car garaging and off-street parking, are just the start of a wonderful home that puts you in the heart of one of Christchurch’s most desirable suburbs with zoning for Christchurch Girls and Boys High Schools, and easy access to the retail, hospitality and services of Fendalton, Merivale and Riccarton. Once properties of this calibre sell, they are a long time coming back on the market so if you’re going to make your move on this one, you need to register your interest now.

Open Homes: Saturday and Sunday, 1pm to 1.30pm. See you at the open home or before for a private viewing, contact Cameron Bailey of Harcourts Gold Papanui (Licensed Agent REAA 2008) on 352 6166 or mobile 0275 557 079.
